The ASME B16.5 Socket Weld Flange (SW) has a socket (counterbore) at the bore matching the pipe outer diameter. The pipe is inserted into the socket and welded at the bore and outer diameter, creating a smooth bore connection with excellent flow characteristics. Socket weld flanges are designed for small-diameter, high-pressure piping systems where the strength and fatigue resistance of a Weld Neck flange is not required.
